autumn (September 20, 2006)
One of the most common questions that people ask an expressionist
painter is “what is it”? Human beings have minds that want to identify
subject matter even though most of everything they see is abstract in
“real” life. Eyes see prisms of color, reflections from windows, rays of
streaming light, shadows that create distorted images, and yet, minds
identify those sights with concrete subject matter. Autumn is a perfect
example.
This painting is seen thousands of times each fall in “reality”. Yet, most
minds will not accept this painting as something seen. Most minds will not
accept that “autumn” is an answer for, “what is it”? Minds want to see the
trees, the house on the hill among the trees. Minds want to make images
seen into context among the trees.
However, if one allows the feeling of marvel to strip the mind of its power
then sight becomes amazing. The curiosity of how a leaf changes color
becomes a reflection of how one may change him or herself. Then the
mind can be used to assert its function on utilizing the creativity to make
change happen. My mind works best when it is in the backseat taking
direction from my creativity. Otherwise, life is an exercise in futility.
