can’t separate the arts (September 11, 2007)
Reflective expressionism is wholistic. Absolute creativity encompasses all of the arts, and that is why my work
necessitates connectivity to words, images, and thoughts that have causal relationships. Economists often
refer to models that rely on “givens” to extrapolate conclusions. In reflective expressionism, “givens” do not
exist, and each set of circumstances has to be isolated to make inferences. The exercise would be technical
to paint without the thoughts that go into the painting. The words would not have a visual relationship to the
meanings without the painting. The painting stimulates the writing, and the writing stimulates the painting.
Creativity uses all of the arts in the toolbox to communicate a feeling.
The information age has dealt an interesting dynamic to a culture increasingly obsessed by visual images. In
an era of most anything being available in visual form, our culture is very simplistic and novice in its ability to
interpret visual imagery. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but those thousand words are often in
elementary form. Manipulation of visual images used for self-serving purposes is as much a danger to truth
as manipulation of words or knowledge in the past. The irony is that as generations grow accustomed to the
fast-paced digital age, and mental slowness is perceived as a liability, the art of the word will become more
important to interpret the subtle distinctions in visual imagery. The affect will be to draw distinctions to
images meant to manipulate versus those that are meant to promote altruistic intentions.
Technology has enabled the vast capability of creating visual imagery. However, communicating through
visual means requires the understanding of diverse cultural differences to generate a message that is
interpreted as it was intended to communicate. Otherwise, all forms of communication may be
counterproductive or misconstrued without the wholistic ability to use the arts to communicate. This next
great advancement in human abilities will, in affect, give the world one language for which many of conflicts
may be avoided.
What exactly does this mean to me? I think the message is that reflective expressionism will be an important
component of educating a culture to effectively communicate with one another. The ability to communicate
will transgress the need to accumulate knowledge for competitive sake. The circle of influence will be made
available to those who are able to communicate their natural being as it is meant to provide a societal
benefit. This characteristic of success will replace the proclamation of expertise assumed by degree or level
of education. Influence will be interpreted by the outside looking in at someone who can effectively
communicate their expertise making others understand in communicative terms. This is the information age
and the era of not simply knowing information as trivia to impress, but rather how information pertains to life
on individual terms. Otherwise, the information will be tossed into the great landfills of cyberspace never to
be seen or used by our culture.
