blue evolution (July 16, 2008)
This flag has become symbolic in many ways. The stripes
reflect origin which is grounded as a beginning point. The real
essence of the flag, however, is in the blue.
The early flag saw many changes. The number and
placement of stars changed often. The early flag was shown
ragged, at times, but with pride of individual growth enhanced
by a symbol of acceptance. The condition of the flag was not
paramount. The display was not paramount. It was seen with
rips, patches, and holes. The importance was derived from
the representation of expressive qualities accepted by those
who believed in what the symbol represented. Many people
displayed the flag in their own expressive way.
Today, this symbol is pristine when shown. People do not like
to display it in the land that it represents. It rarely is seen in the
neighborhoods. The flag itself is symmetric with perfect lines.
It is hung in complete stretched fashion with the perfect
monotone shades in the colors of red, white, and blue. The
blue has been the same for some time now. People who say
the flag matters get angered when the flag is not displayed
perfectly. They are angered by the audacity of non-conformity
to the rules of display. We revel in our traditions. Maybe, we
should let go of the blue box by ridding ourselves of stardom,
and let it evolve into something less structured. The evolution
may provide more depth.
